“Other reporters were using those machines to record everything that was going on the court but that wasn’t for me. I taught myself shorthand and that is how I kept track of everything. In fact, I still use shorthand for my notes to myself because I don’t want everyone reading them and knowing what I am doing,” she laughed.There were many community adventures that never made their way into the courtroom. She recalls her disappointment as a young woman when plans to attend a traveling circus performance were derailed when the star attraction, an elephant named Norma Jean, was felled by a bolt of lightning; and how the community came together to bury Norma Jean in a city park.
